Helen Twyford - now Helen Patrick

I studied a BA, majoring in English and French. I did my 1st year at Maritzburg and my 2nd and 3rd years at Tuks (University of Pretoria). Then I did a post-graduate teacher’s diploma at Wits. Helen

I taught high school English for a number of years. Then I left teaching and went to work at the SABS. I married Philip in1990 and moved to Midrand. I gave birth to my only child, Nicola in 1992.After a year at home; I went to work at the SABS again. I eventually went back to teaching, but taught senior primary school – English, English for non-English speaking pupils, and computer literacy. After a couple of years, I moved to a small new school and taught junior primary. Of all the phases I have taught, that is my favourite. After teaching there for 6 years, I became very ill, and had to be medically boarded. We moved back to Pretoria. Since then I have been at home. I do relief teaching, and I am trying to start up an editing business from home.

My husband is an IT consultant, and my daughter has just matriculated from Girls’ High, which still has very high standards, but is much more pupil-friendly nowadays.

Helens Family

I used to do modern dancing, which I loved. I now just belong to an exercise class. I am quite involved in my church too.

I am still good friends with Sue Carte, and friends with Clairanne Lando, Sue-Anne van den Berg and Cathy Hare.
