Clairanne Lando

Clairannel Clairanne2 30 years is a long time! When I matriculated I had no idea what to study so went to Greys in Pietermaritzburg and studied nursing – quite an experience. After 2 years I eventually realized nursing was not for me and enrolled at UCT to do Business Science. Worked hard 1st year, but 2nd year was an amazing party year so of course failed dismally! Had to change to Bcom which I managed to complete in 1989. During that time in 1987 my younger sister, Fleur also a PHSG old girl, was killed by a drunk driver whilst cycling in a biathlon – a tragedy we have come to terms with.

From 1990 I worked in Joburg at the Stock exchange briefly, traveled through Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe for a month in an old Landi with 4 friends (one of my dreams fulfilled!) . I then met my husband, Mike, through a badminton club. He had just left his teaching post at Hyde Park and gone into retail at Sterns and I was working at Randmines. Thanks to Foschini for buying out Sterns we were moved to Cape Town and have lived here ever since and love it.

We have two boys, Sean-Michael (16) and Devon (13), who keep us very busy at weekends as they are both very sporty and excel at any ball sports. This means I have had to learn to understand the intricacies of cricket, hockey and rugby. Sean-Michael is currently in the Bishops cricket 1st11 and wants to play professionally. Carol

I currently work as the School Business Manager at St Cyprian’s School – a wonderful Anglican all girls school. I usually move on after five years, but have lasted over seven here as working at a school is never dull. Mike left retail in 2006 and he runs the company that he and I bought called Cape Letting, which is holiday and long term rentals in Cape Town. We are currently expanding the business so that I can leave formal employment and work from home full time instead of at night!

Unfortunately I do not think I will make it to Pretoria for the reunion but it is great hearing all your news. I am still friends with Helen Twyford and Sue-Ann van den Berg.
